Summer of Skills

SwansThis summer the LSC is launching the ‘Summer of Skills’. This activity will help raise awareness about the benefits of learning new skills and will address the barriers that people identify when considering learning. The ‘Summer of Skills’ will include a refreshed burst of the Skills Campaign TV advert, which will appear on your screens throughout the summer until 24 August. In addition to the TV adverts there will be press, radio, outdoor and PR activity.

The overall learner message is: “There are tangible benefits to learning, so don’t let anything stop you.”  T: 0800 011 30 30     www.lsc.gov.uk/inourhands

In addition to radio and TV adverts, there was a four-page pull-out with the Daily Mirror (published in w/c 28 July), the content includes practical help with tackling this barrier/talking to your employer about training, facts and information on adult learning, case studies from an employer and employee perspective, and general messages about the benefits of learning. Click here to view the advert

A ‘Top Boss’ press release was issued in July – this positive piece draws on results from a commissioned survey about what employees feel a ‘top boss’ would look like.  It includes quotes from James Caan, a panellist on Dragons Den, as well as LSC and DIUS spokespersons.

A ‘Welcome to the Summer of Skills’ email to celebrate the launch of the campaign was sent out to providers just prior to the campaign breaking.  This was followed up by a direct mailer, which included a desktop calendar. Flash cards containing facts / figures / key messages will be developed for each of the campaign themes and mailed out to partners to coincide with consumer campaign activities.

Copies of all advertising material is accessible via the LSC campaign resources website http://www.lsc.gov.uk/campaignresources

Skills for Life

BerylThe ‘Get On’ Skills for Life campaign has started (w/c 28 July – w/c 11 Aug).  The focus of the message is to direct people to the help line 0800 66 0800 and the web site http://geton.direct.gov.uk/ to help them find free local maths courses.

‘Beryl’ and friends, (a set of characters formed of hands) made their debut during the first phase of the campaign when it launched in March earlier this year. The characters personify potential learners’ journeys, and encourage them to have the confidence to enquire about a Get On course

The campaign also includes advertising throughout August on six sheet posters, bus headliners, press advertising in women’s and youth interest magazines and also radio adverts across England.  Beryl will also make her big screen debut throughout August in local cinemas with the advert being played before some of the summer blockbusters, as well as teaser advertising slides within selected cinemas.

Adult Learning Grant (ALG)

alg logoOn 25 June we launched PR activity to celebrate the success of ALG one year on since its national roll out. Statistics to reveal how many people have used ALG in the past year, exceeding expectations, were supported by case studies of people who have successfully used ALG to help them since national roll out. Coverage has been generated regionally, as well as nationally, including an interview with BBC Radio 4's Learning Curve programme and the Daily Mirror interviewed and photographed an ALG case study for a feature.

Radio adverts encouraging people to find out more and apply for ALG will be running on local radio stations throughout the summer, along with regional newspaper adverts and a radio promotion where local DJs will talk about ALG.
