“From Competence to Excellence”: Turning today’s top apprentices into tomorrow’s highly-skilled workers

Deloitte have been appointed by the LSC to coordinate the delivery of 500 expert classes in a range of vocational areas to 5,000 learners and 1,000 tutors across the nine LSC regions between late January and June. This will include approximately 60 expert classes in the South East region.

The aim will be to promote skills and highlight the importance of excellence for the individual and also British businesses in general. The expert classes will be given by people who are leading practitioners in their field to selected apprentices and other trainees. The “From Competence to Excellence” programme will help to raise the aspirations of all of those engaged in the acquisition of skills and in particular that of young people, employers, trainers and Apprenticeships.

Deloitte are looking to work closely with employers, FE colleges, work-based training providers and tutors in order to host, organise the expert classes and identify talented individuals to attend. Partners already include Toyota and Rolls Royce. Those providers that are unable to host or deliver an expert class, but who would like to be involved, can help by identifying talented apprentices to attend the expert classes.

The expert classes will also provide a stepping stone for the best apprentices to compete in WorldSkills UK competitions, and be inspired to participate at future WorldSkills events, such as Calgary 2009 and London 2011.

The masterclasses are aimed at 16-24 year old vocational and apprentice learners. Classes are generally 1-2 days and Deloittes are targeting providers in priority or specialist areas.

To further promote these masterclasses and also Apprenticeship week (w/c 25th February) the marketing and communications team have organised a series of ‘Apprenticeship taster’ sessions around the region. Please see the article on ‘Apprenticeship Week’ for further details.

Please see www.fcte.co.uk for more information or contact David Mason at Deloitte on email davidmason@deloitte.co.uk or telephone 0771 5105240.

National Apprenticeship Week

Apprenticeship Week will pay tribute to the achievements of employers and apprentices and explain the key role Apprenticeships are playing in today's world.

This is a week-long event to celebrate the success of Apprenticeships, raise the programme's profile and encourage more employers to take on apprentices.

Apprenticeship Week, which will become an annual event, will be held from 25th to 29th February 2008.

It will include debates, interviews and activities throughout the country – all designed to show the real-life benefits of Apprenticeships.

Apprenticeships Summit

The week's key event will be the Apprenticeships Summit, to be held at Congress Centre in London's West End, on Tuesday 26th February.

A number of high-profile guests will be there to talk about the recently-published Apprenticeships Review and to outline the Government's aspirations for the Apprenticeship programme.

Later in the week, the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) will host an event to pay tribute to the success of the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence. More than 700 individuals have now completed this qualification - some of whom may well go on to represent the country at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Many of these talented sportsmen and women have been invited along to talk about the impact their Apprenticeship has had on them and to encourage and inspire others who are considering this route.

Meanwhile a number of employers will be using Apprenticeship Week to explain why Apprenticeships have such a vital role to play in today's world. They include BT, the winner of last year's Large Employer of the Year award at the Apprenticeship Awards, who will be hosting a seminar to promote the benefits of Apprenticeships to their supplier companies.

A range of PR activates are planned for the week, these include: a paint spraying challenge at Thatcham Motor Vehicles in Berkshire, an aircraft simulation exercise hosted by local Sussex company, Thales and a hospitality master class organised by HTP in Hampshire.

Nationally and regionally there will be above and below the line campaigns, details of which are given in the table below.

If you are planning any PR activity for National Apprenticeship week, please email details to julia.thompson@lsc.gov.uk.

The Planner contains signposting to information about further education, accommodation, finance, jobs, health and other support organisations. The usefulness and effectiveness of the Right Track Personal Planner will be evaluated by a market research project by KMPG who will be consulting with both teaching staff using the planner as a teaching resource and ex-offenders post release.

Registering your provision is a relatively painless procedure, a tick list of all subject areas is provided and should take no more than 10 minutes to complete. Registering your provision online will mean that you automatically receive leads from the system as the website will be extensively advertised and promoted with both young people and employers across the region.
