Prestigious awards ceremony will showcase skills excellence in learners and employers in the South East

Celebrating excellence in skills and heralding the outstanding achievements of learners and employers across the South East will be at the forefront of a prestigious awards ceremony being hosted by the Learning and Skills Council South East (LSC).

The LSC South East Learning and Skills Awards 2008, which takes place on 22 May at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire, will highlight the huge range of talent and achievement of the people and organisations in the region and the contribution this effort makes to creating a vibrant South East economy.

This is the second year of the LSC South East Learning and Skills Awards and builds on previous Apprenticeship Awards by extending the award categories to add value to the achievements of learners throughout the region.

This year there will be 12 awards on offer.

The Award categories are:

Train to Gain (Outstanding Employer and Learner) Awards

These two awards will recognise innovation and excellence in the development of skills in the workplace by an employer and employee.  The Train to Gain Employer Award will honour employers in the South East who have trained their staff through Train to Gain, the service which aims to improve the productivity and competitiveness of businesses by making sure employers have the right skills in their workforce to do the job. The Train to Gain Outstanding Learner Award will acknowledge and celebrate employees who have undertaken work-related training funded through Train to Gain, and who can demonstrate how they and their employers have benefited from this.

14-19 Young Achiever of the Year Award

This Award is designed to particularly honour learners who have undertaken a significant learning journey. The journey will have been one of discovery that has seen the learner embrace new opportunities and make a commitment to extend their learning and development in the future. A distinctive feature of this award will also be the support that the learner has received from partnership working.

Skills for Life Plus Award

This category seeks to acknowledge and celebrate an individual who has achieved their goals and exceeded all expectations by conquering literacy, language and numeracy issues; achieving a full-level NVQ Level 2 qualification and progressing onto employment.

Achieving against the Odds Learner Award

Will recognise an individual who has been involved in continuous development whilst serving a community sentence or following release from a custodial setting or on release on a temporary license (ROTL) for the purpose of employment or education. Judges are looking for individuals who have worked within challenging circumstances to overcome barriers, changing the course of their life through education.

In addition to these categories, employers and learners across the South East have been submitting their applications in the following regional apprenticeship categories:

Employer Awards

Awarded to owners or managers in small (1 - 49 employees), medium (50 – 249 employees) and large (250+ employees) businesses, who have shown a commitment to Apprenticeships and supported their employees during their training.

Apprentice of the Year Awards

One awarded for an Apprenticeship and one for an Advanced Apprenticeship, where their contribution to their workplace has exceeded expectations and resulted in measurable benefits.

Young Apprentice of the Year Award

Seeks to acknowledge and celebrate a young learner’s exceptional achievements during their two years on the Young Apprenticeship Programme. Judges are looking for entrants who have made the most of their time on the Programme, demonstrating considerable progress personally and in their studies.

Personal Achiever Award

Goes to an apprentice aged between 16-24 years who has successfully overcome barriers to learning and has achieved and exceeded all expectations.

There will also be a Commendation for each award, granted at the discretion of the judges.

For the Apprenticeship awards any employer in the South East offering Apprenticeship programmes funded by the South Learning and Skills Council is eligible to apply. They must have a dynamic approach to training and be able to demonstrate how the Apprenticeship route has brought tangible business benefits to their organisation.

Henry Ball, Learning and Skills Council South East Regional Director says: “With increased knowledge and skills being the competitive advantage for the South East, it is crucial to recognise the value of learning and how critical it is for both people and business.  Individuals acquiring new skills can transform their lives and careers. Businesses harnessing training can see a new and truly energised workforce. This will be championed and reflected in our LSC South East Learning and Skills Awards 2008 which will celebrate greater training opportunities and its real impact on producing better developed people, resulting in direct business benefits for the region. This event will recognize employers from across the South East who are committed to training their workforce alongside learners who have exceeded their employers’ expectations or who have overcome difficulties to succeed through their training. I want to encourage as many applications as possible from individuals and businesses.”

All entries from the LSC South East Apprenticeship Awards will be automatically entered for assessment for the National Apprenticeship Awards which takes place in London on the 10th July 2008. All winners and those commended from the South East Apprenticeship award categories will be considered for the National Awards.
